Tracking is most useful when the records are easy to make and easy to understand later. Start with the money you actually spend today. Add detail when it helps you answer a question, rather than trying to build the perfect system on day one.
This guide uses a fictional day: $6.75 for coffee, $24.50 for lunch, and $128.68 for groceries. The total is $159.93. You can use the same steps with your own amounts.
1. Set up an account you recognize
Create or choose the account used for the payment. Give it a name you can distinguish from other accounts, such as “Everyday” or “Cash,” and check its currency. If you enter an opening balance, use an amount that reflects the starting point you want your records to represent.
An account in Monaura reflects what has been recorded. It is not a live connection to your bank, and an unrecorded transaction will not automatically appear. Keep this distinction in mind when comparing a recorded balance with a statement.
2. Enter the first expense
Open the transaction entry flow and select Expense. Enter the amount, check the account and currency, and choose a category. For a $6.75 coffee, a food or drinks category may be enough. Use the transaction date that matches the purchase.
As you type, the banknotes and coins change with the amount. The numeric amount is still the exact value to check before saving. The visual composition is an equivalent representation, regardless of whether you paid by card or cash.
3. Add context only where it helps
A note can distinguish a routine meal from a special event. A tag can group records that belong to the same trip across different categories. An image can keep a receipt or supporting detail near the transaction.
You do not need every field on every record. If a field is not useful to you, focus on getting the amount, date, account, and category right. Consistency in those details makes a later review easier.
4. Review a small group of records
After entering the sample coffee, lunch, and groceries, review the three entries. Check that the amounts add to $159.93 and that the dates and accounts are correct. If you find a mistake, open the transaction details and correct the original entry.
Avoid recording the same expense a second time to fix a note or category. When importing records from CSV later, check for overlap with records you have already entered. Review the import preview before committing the batch.
5. Keep account movement separate
Moving money between your own accounts is not the same as spending it. Use the transfer flow when appropriate and verify the source and destination. In different currencies, also check what each account actually lost or received.
This distinction helps avoid describing the same money as both an account transfer and a purchase. The question for an expense is what you bought; the question for a transfer is where your money moved.
6. Give the records a regular glance
Choose a convenient moment to review your recent activity. Look for missing purchases and unclear categories before examining longer trends. Once you have records you trust, you can explore a monthly budget or the statistics and budget features.
7. Save a backup or move to another platform
Before removing the app or changing devices, open Settings → Data Management → Backup & Restore. Create a .monaura file and save it to a destination you control. Password protection is on by default: enter and confirm at least 6 characters. A lost password cannot be reset. If you turn protection off, the password fields are removed and cleared; anyone holding the file can read its contents.
Choose that file in Monaura on iOS, Android or HarmonyOS. A protected file opens a separate Unlock Backup step: enter the password used when it was created. An unprotected file goes directly to validation and preview. Review the preview before confirming. Restoration replaces current financial records rather than merging two devices. Restoration cannot be undone within the app, and no automatic pre-restore copy is created. If you need to keep your current records, create and save a backup before restoring another file.
The file contains accounts, transactions, recorded account movements, categories, tags, budgets and their relationships. It excludes images, transaction attachments, profile photos, app settings, reminders and purchase entitlements. Set up the preferences you need on your destination device. CSV exchanges transaction data and does not replace an entity-data backup.
After restoring records with multiple currencies on iOS, Android or HarmonyOS, if statistics report missing exchange rates, open the currency and exchange-rate settings to update them. Exchange rates are not included in ledger backups. Once the required rates are available, statistics recalculate without changing historical account postings.
Saving a file to a system cloud drive does not enable automatic cloud synchronization. Visiting this website does not back up financial history, and the website does not receive or restore backup files.
